She then received nine counts of federal charges and fled the country, to later come back when the charges where dropped and continue the legalization of birth control.
There were three specific events that led to the Everett Massacre. This event happened in Washington in a shingle mill factory. The first action being that owners and boss' had agreed to increase wages, but that didn't happen so the 'Wobblies' were ordered to leave town. Instead the workers used their right to free speech, and went to speak in front of the Hewitt Avenue Crossroads. But when they tried to come back into town by fairy; sheriffs started beating them and lots of fights started. This led to a gunshot, which caused more gunshots, which caused the Everett Massacre.
Kate. Ludlow, Colorado was one of the biggest mining facilities, but was also known for having the number one coal mine fatality rate. Pay was around a dollar a day and extremely bad sanitation and working conditions. Miners grew angry and upset and went on strike. Therefore strikebreakers were brought in and unions were made. In consequence for the protesting, miners were kicked out of company housing and onto the streets. Unions set up tent cities for the miners and their families to live in. The situation progressively got worse and militia men came in with armed forces. They shot randomly at all the tents killing men, women, and children. Foxholes were dug for protection from the unceasing fires. Overnight, the tents were soaked in Kerosene gas and set ablaze, killing more than 13 people. This tragic event is known as the Ludlow Massacre.
Tiffany H. Margaret Sanger was a women that made birth control available to American women. Birth control was very important back then because if a women could not control getting pregnant then she could possibility die while giving birth. Margaret, after college, decided to be an actress but did not want to give her leg measurements so she started looking for a new source. Then her mom got sick and she had to nurse her because she was close to death. After she nursed her she got more interested so she then studied more about birth control and family planning techniques. She was put in jail while teaching about birth control because it was illegal to teach about. She then died in 1943, when she single-handing legalized birth control.
In the early 1900's there was a sociologist by the name Lewis Hine. He was interested in photography and became a photo journalist. He started going to factories and mines and learned that young children were doing all the labor, with no pay and horribly treated. He thought this was horrible so started taking pictures to show the public. Once these factories found out, they started denying him access to the facilities and was considered a "muckraker". He started using hidden cameras to capture his photos and because of this, The declaerat5ion of Dependence was passed and freed all of the children. Child Labor Laws were enforced soon after.
The story i read was about a fire at a factory and many people were dying. A guy watched as woman jumped from the building and died as they hit the ground. The reason they were jumping is that the building didn't have any fire exits so their only choice was to jump from the building rather than being burnt to death. These were not good working conditions at all. The guy watching realized that these girls went on strike in the past to get better working conditions. The factory didn't listen and without fire escapes there was no safety in a fire. This led to many deaths of the girls who were once trying to prevent this situation.
Shingle workers went on strike,on May 1 of the year 1916.In the Pacific Northwest.A promise was said by the Everett Mill owners, the promise was to increase wages when the price of shingles rose.Thats when the Wooblies organized a plan and got together and then went on strike. Then the Everett sheriff ordered the wooblies to leave town, and then spoke in Hewitt Avenue.Wooblies went to speak and some were killed and beaten by deputies when suddenly gun shots happened.
Joe Hill, poet/song writer, joined the Five Year Old organization to grab the attention of workers with the sound of music. As a worker, he knew the conditions were bad and Nation workers wanted a better life and a different society. However, Joe had been arrested, charged with murder and shot in the chest all in one night. Trade unions wanted to execute him and eventually found a way. In time, Joe Hill was executed, but his poetic music still lives on.
The Lulow Massacre what mainly informing the reader about the massacre in Colorado in the year 1913. The coal miners got tired of the unsafe working conditions ant the poor pay, which was about $1.68 per day. They decided to go on strike, which caused the officials to get mad and kick the workers and their family's out on the streets. The workers ad their family s had no where to go so they built tents so their family s would have somewhere to sleep and live. On April 2nd, 1914 officials came with guns and fire ran randomly killing many. That same day later on the officials also soaked the tents with gas and set ablaze killing the family s inside. the main idea was that the factory got in fire. the gilrs who works in the factory they demanded the factory because the factory it was not safe for them.they demanded the factory for more sanitary conditions and more safety precaution in the shop.so the people di not listen to them and the factory got in fire and they die sixty-two dead bodies..the fire men try to help them but they die..;( alicia vasquez
In march 27, 1911 there was a factory called the shirt waste, witch at one point caught on fire. The majority of the people there were woman and there was a man who told the story and he said that it was one of the most horrible events that he has seen. About sixty-two people who jumped the building who had jumped died. The point of this is that the building did not have any exits or fire escapes, which made it a very dangerous place to work but the people had to work. So after all that ended the girls went on strike but the factory did not listen to them.
Jorge C The main idea of the article is that this women called Margaret Sanger, who was a social activist wanted birth control in American gave a chance for American women to have birth control, Margaret was a nurse, so she new a lot of stuff. Margaret fled to England when all the charges were dropped so she returned and she was jailed she also she opened a birth control clinic.
Back in march 27, 1911 a shirt waste factory was coaught on fire and 62 people had died from jumping out the factory. the majority of people were women in the building. The man that told the story said it was the most horrible thing he had seen in his life. The building did not have any fire exits so it was not a very safe place to work especially because it was a factory. So all the women went on strike and did not work for the factory.
The Ludlow massacre was the killing of union minors and their families. The conditions and pay were horrible during this time. To go to work at the Ludlow mine in Colorado was very dangerous, Colorado had the highest fatality rate in the U.S.. The pay was horrible, the workers pay was $1.68 a day. They could barley pay for company housing and tools. These conditions led the workers to strike. When the workers went on strike the officials got angry. The officials sent in a detective agency to stop the strike. When the strike didn't stop the agency set the tents on fire and shot random shots at the workers and their family. This massacre caused many men and their families to die when fighting for their own rights.
Joe Hills main idea was to join a 5-year-old organization union to get workers sanitary work conditions and to help change their overall life style. Joe hill joined the union and created a strategy of using music to get the attention of workers. This helped him to bring in new members to the union. The union put up many strikes and protests to get not only what they wanted but what they needed in order to stay healthy. Many people did not like Joe hill because of the huge impact that he trying to make. In 1914 people blamed Joe for the shooting murder of the grocery store owner. Others believed he had been framed and even the trade unions wanted the government to reconsider the death sentence. Still the sentence continued and Joe hill died.
the Margaret sanger a social activist is based upon woman rights and how the women of America were neglected. Margaret wanted it to change. Margaret planed on doing it with birth control. the reason she did it this way because she was a nurse and most of her women patience would ask her how to stop having so many babes. legally she was not aloud to tell them but she went against the law and fought back and help control the population. that is the main idea of Margaret sanger a social activist.
Emily C. The main idea of this story was that the shingle workers went on strike on May 1,1961.At first this strike was non-violent, but later on the owners hired strike breakers who attacked and started beating them up. The Everett Sheriff had ordered the wobblies to leave the town. Instead they went to Hewitt Avenue to speak in public. The wobblies had become more violent, which caused them to get beaten even more. At last the sheriff had told the wobblies they couldn't land, which then followed by a gun shot. Five wobblies layed dead with two deputies. The Everett Massacre was the bloodiest event in the Pacific North West.
KM. Joe Hill A poet/song writer, joined a 5 ear old organization union to get workers attention to fight for a better life. He wanted to better workers lives but instead of having to win what he wanted he got accused of murder. Trade unions and government wanted to reconsider the death sentence but they found a way to execute him anyways, he was executed but him poetry and music everyone people will forever remember.
Idaly.M. The article of "The Ludlow Masssacre" talks about how workers of a gold mine wanted to strike on May,1,1916. At first there wasn't any violence but then the owners found out then got them really bad.ON APRIL 20 1914 The workers were attack by the Colorado militiamen.
In these times, working conditions were horrible and very unsanitary, pay checks were small and no one wanted to live this life. Groups called wobblies were formed to protest in order to make change. Some groups would even go to the extent of jumping on stage during public gatherings and speaking their thoughts. This behavior fueled cops behavior and forced them to beat and even kill some protectors
the story i read is about the everett massacre. what happened is the shingle workers went on strike because they wanted higher wages. the police dident get involved till wobblies came and they dident allow that so someone shot and bullets where flying through the air, it turned into a totol slotter. only one was blammed and no one knew whho fired the first bullet.
Shingle workers of Everett, Washington, went on strike May 1, 1916. The strike started off peacefully and progressively turned violent. "Strikebreakers" tried to stop the strike with policemen fighting at there side. Throughout the Everett Massacre, two policemen and five wobblies were killed. Each wobblie was charged with murder. All of this resulted in the event becoming the single bloodiest event in pacific northwest labor history.
Joe Hill wrote poetry and songs for the Wobblies because he believed that they stuck with the reader or listener and would be heard or read more than once. The overall main idea of the paragraph is that even though there were many risks of being a Wobbly, they were very dedicated to what they stood for. Many people disagreed/disliked the Wobblies, because they thought they threatened their way of life.
In 1880 kids were forced into laboring, and every one but the smallest children had to work.Kids from the ages five to nine had to pick cotton. There were also very harsh working hours. Kids had to work from 3:30am to 5pm, and they couldn't stop working until they were finished with the job.Working conditions were super dangerous because of how the machines worked and how they could get sick from mining. An example is of a young driver at a mine in Brown who was most likely getting lung disease. They were forcing kids into labor and it was taking the kids freedom away and there safety.
elana neiley The photographs that were in my packet clearly showed the harshness of child labor. According to the photos as soon as a child could comprehend what was being said, then he or she went to work. There was a picture of children five to nine years old lifting twenty pounds of cotton onto their backs. The children worked shifts that were twelve hours long. A caption stated that kids got up a 3:30 and worked until 5:00 p.m.. The children were surrounded by machines that could tear off limbs. There was a newspaper article that reported a 15 year old boy being killed because he got stuck under a coal chute. The factories and mines were dirty and dangerous. They robbed children of the ability to have fun and act like kids.Child labor was cruel to the children
Abby Russell- The Coal Miners in Ludlow, Colorado, were fed up with the low pay and work conditions they had to live through on a daily basis. Them having to pay and buy everything from the company that they worked for angered them to go on strike. It got to the point where miners had to live in tents built by the union, because the company evicted them and their families to live on the muddy streets. The company hired militia-men to roam the streets with loaded guns if the strike continued. on April 20, 1914, miners and their families were caught by surprise when the men set fire on their tents. They also shot gunfire at many of the miners and their loved ones, many families got away. But most of them hid in foxholes. Forty miners and thirteen children died, none of the militia-men were punished for what they had done. From that day in history it has been known as The Tudlow Massacre.
Children are forced to work in factories, mills, cotton fields and mines. everyone but the smallest babies are forced to work long hours with little pay. Most children, some aged 5-9, work in dangerous and/or health hazardous working condition that could lead to illness or possibly death. Some young kids work in mills and cotton fields without gloves or socks for protection. Kids shouldn't have to work 12+ hour days, and most certainly not in potentially dangerous conditions. -Beeler (P.S modern warfare 2 is awesome!)
Margaret Sanger not only supported the Wobblies with the children's exodus but, she was striven to make birth control legal to women in America. After she was offended when trying to become an actress, Margaret had a strong opinion on women's rights. Her attention was drawn towards the debates about women's rights and discrimination and soon began studying great female leaders. Once becoming a nurse, she had a stronger belief in making birth legal. Margaret observed the need for birth control in weak women. This led to the start of her "three-prong approach" towards birth control. Soon after, she began the Planned Parenthood Federation of America and almost single handedly legalized birth control. Even after being jailed, she pursued to get the word out and educate Americans. With much determination, this social activist achieved her goal of making birth control legal.
In the reading Everett Massacre there was the largest troubles with strikes in the Pacific North West. The strikes started out non-violent but increasingly got worse. The first day of striking was on May 1, 1916. At first the police avoided taking sides but in August fought against the strikers. They fought against them by arresting and beating most to all of the strikers and Union workers. Then in November the police and the strikers faced off and broke into riot. In the end five wobblies and two deputies lay dead, with 50 others wounded. All of the remaining wobblies were charged with murder. All in all this showed how strikes can start out peacefully but end in strife.
In October 1913 the coal miners of Ludlow Colorado, finally decided to do something about the unsafe working conditions, they were payed 1.68 dollars a day and they worked in really unsafe places. so they decided to go on strike. when they were on strike they punished them by kicking them out of their houses and into the dirty streets. however the union build two hundred tents for 10 thousand miners including men and women and children. on April 20th 1914 the miners were celebrating Greek Easter, when the militia men attacked. they put all the tents on fire, and they shot a lot of people including 13 children all this disturbing events happen in Ludlow Colorado.
One of the best examples of the Progressive Era was Margaret Sanger. This was an spectacular woman who fought for woman's rights. She became interested in woman's right after a leg measurement in a acting audition . After her mother died of tuberculosis she became interested in the medicine field and studied to afterwords become a nurse. Her opinion towards birth control became stronger in after becoming a nurse, also as she saw the need for it in woman. Margaret accomplished many things in her life. By the time she died she had written 11 books on the topic of birth control, opened a clinic on birth control, (even though she was jailed for it when she was freed she reopened it) she also accomplished to create the Plan Parenthood Federation of America, and almost single handed legalized birth control.
The Everett Massacre was one of the most violent massacres in the Pacific Northwest history. It began in May 1 1916 when workers were striking peacefully but as time progressed they became increasingly worse. The police supported the strike breakers and deputies began to beat the speakers of Hewit Ave. Union men attempted to use their freedom of speech but were arrested immediately. On November 5th a ferry was filled with 250 Wobbly workers, police surrounded the ferry. A gun shot was fired which started the Everett Massacre. Five Wobblies and two Police men were killed by the time the ferry pulled away. In the end every Wobbly was charged with murder and sent to trail.
The article "Margaret Sanger, Social Activist" talks about a women from New York, Named Margaret Sanger. She believed that woman should have the right to use Birth Control. She faced many oppositions from the Gov. and many religious groups. She was threaten by 9 counts of breaking thee law. She Fled to England. When she returned she open up a clinic called "Planned Parenthood." By her death(1943), she almost legalized Birth Control by herself.
This is a great story about a young women that was born being told that she has no rights in the world of man.she wanted to be an actor but when she was asked for her leg measurements she quit and went back to her nearly dead mother so that she could nurse her back to health or at least try. She then became a legit nurse and during that time she was asked about birth control but it would have been illegal to tell them so eventualy she began her own birth control revolution, she was thrown in jail for this and she ran to England to get away from the law. Shortly before she had died she had made telling people about birth control legaland she nearly did it by herself.
In the Article,"Joe Hill, Wobbly Poet and Song Writer" a man named Joe hill helped start a revolution involved with the Union. He imigrated from Sweden and led many people to be apart of the Wobblies. He did this by writing many songs and peoms so that people would come and find out what is going on. Unfortunatly he was arrested for his efforts in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 1914 he was put on trial for shooting his son and a clerk at a local store. The same night that the attck happened he was shot in the chest and so was the person who shot his son. Joe stood true to what he belived by saying that he was shot because of a fight over a woman. He continued his work in jail even when his life was nearing it's end. Many people including the president asked for another trial so that he could be free, but he was executed by a firing scuad in that same year.
Joe Hill was a dedicated wobbly from Sweden who emigrated to the U.S. He was also a hobo, a rebel, and a song writer he joined the union in 1910. The wobblies put catch new words to the tunes of popular new songs. Because people were afraid of their ways of living would be change by wobblies it was risky being one. In 1914 Hill was arrested with a charge of murder of a grocery store owner. After Hill was shot in the chest he claimed innocent but refused to explain how he got wounded, except to say it was a fight over a woman. Joe Hill was framed! Although Joe Hill was executed his spirit still lived in his songs. Joe Hill's last will became a prized piece poem and show how dedicated wobblies really were.
Jade C. W1 The thought of children as young as 2+ working nonstop in dangerous places is unbelievable. When you read about it, and see proof, it all makes you feel so sorry for the kids. Everyone but the smallest babies work, 5-9 year old children pick pounds and pounds of cotton hourly. The working hours were long and harsh. Many kids worked until they were done, and others worked from 3:30 am to 5:00 pm, nonstop labor. The working conditions were dangerous, and very harmful not to just the children but others as well. Kids drove int he mines and young Children, because they were small and fast, worked in dangerous places such as the Hosiery Mills and other factories. If you were not careful easily your hand could get broken or destroyed in a machine, same with your hair often times you had to cut your hair in order to stay somewhat safe. The poor children were also not always the cleanest. Depending on their jobs and their hours, they often times either didn't have time to bathe or just couldn't. Let's all be happy that there is now no child labor.
On may 1st union men formed a group that protested the scabs. They would start out as a non-violent group but would escalate into the bloodiest single event in the the Pacific Northwest. It started on May 1st and ended a mere 6 months later on November 5. As this escalated into a police fight on the the side of the strike breaker. Police would often beat protester and anyone that stood on the soapbox was immediately taken down and arrested. on Nov. 5 two police were shot and five protesters were killed all of the protesters were charged with murder. to this day no one knows who fired the first shot.
Sierra Beightel When a building caught on fire in I witness at the Triangle, over 100 child labors were killed with no way to escape their fates. 54 of the child labors wanted to escape the slow and painful death of the fire awaiting for them by jumping out of the windows and plummeting to their deaths. Other other less fortunate were burned to death in the building died the painful and slow way. Before the terrible disaster struck, the child labors striked against their boss for better safety precautions. If the boss would have met their demand, this might have been able to be avoided.
Coal miners in Colorado made the decision to do something about their working conditions, so they went on strike. The company took the miners pay, and evicted the families from the company houses that they were renting and forced them to live on the streets. The miners set up tents to live in, and made "tent cities". The companies that forced these men and their families onto the streets were now harassing them.

Noe P.: In October 1913, the coal miners of ludlow,Colorado finally decided to do something about the unsafe working conditions, and the low pay of $1.68 a day. which was the highest coal mine facility rated in the world. They were tired of being robbed. So they decided to strike the company. The company was angry by the striking, they were about a thousand mine workers. So the company punished the striking miners by acting and the and their families. In April,20,1914 the miner were celebrating in a camp at 10:00 AM and the mea's from the company when and kill lots of men and women, and children.
Joe Hill wrote Music for people to listen about "why are you letting people treat you like this?"he was trying to make a better life for workers in America. It was interesting how Joe hill used music to tell people to fight for their rights i learned how people got treated back then at work. It was awful.
Margaret Sanger was a strong, brave, and intelligent women that had strong feelings about woman's right and birth control. Although, she was caring even as a little child, Margaret soon grew stronger emotions and opinions about woman's rights, right after college when she inspired to become a actress. Margaret went in for and audition on day, and when the director asked for her leg measurement, she was offended, and felt that she need to do something about it. So, she began researching great female leaders of America. After taking care of her ill mother Margaret decided to become a nurse, and took care of many weak and poor mothers, that were in poverty because they continued to have children, Margaret then saw the need for to legalize birth control for American women. She then began her "three Prong approach" ( education, organization, and legislation.) to help her legalize birth control. Before Margaret death in 1943 she had started the planned parenthood federation of America, and almost single handedly legalized birth control. Along with all of those achievements, she also wrote 11 books. Margaret felt strongly about something and took action to get it. although she was imprisoned multiple times she made great achievements for Americas future and helped many women.
Tania C. In the Ludlow massacre so many people lost their homes, family members just because they disided to strike agents coal miners because Colorado had the highest coal mine fatality. So then they had to sleep outside in tents while winter was coming.
The main idea for this story is about a lot of girls who worked at a factory. The girls who worked at the factory died in a fire. Also another thing of it was that they had bad work conditions and the bad workers that worked there they would get a strike.
Cole A. During the 1900's work conditions were very bad.People would strike because of this. The strikes did not work at this particular factory though. It caught on fire and people were forced to jump out a 8 story window. A lot of these workers were young girls and some were even engaged. They either had to make a decision to jump out and have a quicker death or burn to death. The firemen finally came but when they were trying to catch them with a net, the net broke. Work conditions were very bad during the early 1900's and many people died because of this
Flora F. Throughout the early 1900s birth control was illegal, but a woman named Margaret Sanger knew that birth control was crucial because many women were dying due to pregnancy. She became a nurse in New York and heard many pleading women begging for her to help with birth control. Margaret researched birth control for a long time and once she was finished she approached it in three ways. Education, legislation, and organization. She used all three approaches. The postal service and the federal government heavily opposed her beliefs over birth control. It took many years for birth control to become legal but when it did, many women thanked Margaret Sanger for her struggle to make something as important as that become legal.
Lluvia M.D. Liwis H. was a very smart guy who took photography of hard life. The pictures are about how children were took'n out of school had to work hard labor.A lot of accidents came from different jobs, like in the cold mine died or would get burn.Young children woul work hard for long periods of time and wouldn't get paid as well either.kids would work around 5 and older the baby's would not work but once they got to certain age they were put in hard labor.
The Everett Massacre was when the mill workers went on strike because they were promised a raise and never got it. The owner did not like this, so he hired people to beat up the protesters. Some people called the protesters Wobblies. the local government soon got involved and many of the Wobblies were jailed or killed. It got very violent, and the Everett Massacre was the bloodiest single event in the Pacific Northwest labor history. This event was also the last major free-speech fight for the Wobblies.
Emily Myler Joe Hill was a Swedish emigrant who became a traveling activist for workers rights. in 1910, he joined the union and wrote songs and poems tom get workers to fight for their rights. in January 1914, Joe was blamed for the murder of grocery store owner and policeman John Morrison in Utah. Joe Hill was brought to jail and sentenced to execution. although many people including the Swedish government and many American citizens called for his release, Joe was shot for his crimes. while he was in jail, Joe continued to write music and poetry including his famous last will which he handed to a guard outside his sell on his last day alive.
Margaret believe that woman's lives and society depended on controlling growth population. She believed that the woman should decide whether they want to have kids or not, but since it was forbidden to teach about birth control where she lived. She decided to go to England. Then the charges dropped in the united states. So she started a project called Planned parenthood federation of America and also opened a birth control clinic. And when she died in 1943, she almost single-handedly brought about the legalization of birth control in the US.
Lowio took pictures of how life was.In the fotos showed dificul life and also the pictures are about children. Many people have accident,s in their job s because many job s are dangerous, many people died because the mine exploded would died. Many children work in different job, there job are dangerous and hard for they, the children don,t have education because your parents was poor, so the children had to work for help a your parents. This time was very hard for the people and children.
The Ludlow Massacre was a series of events that turned for the worst. First in 1913 coal miners were not getting payed enough in Ludlow Colorado. Colorado had the highest mining fatality rate in the world. They still were only getting payed $1.68 a day. The miners went on strike and set up hundreds of tents and just camped out in Ludlow. The family dug fox hols in the ground for the women and children to hide in, as random shootings were going on. on April 20, 1914 miners were celebrating Greek ester and 10 in the morning. The militia shot at the tents in random direction killing random men women and children. When that didn't work soldiers pored kerosene on the ground around the tents and on them and set fire to all of the tents. Over 40 miners and family's were kill by the burning tents. After all of this the miners got arrested and still got black-balled by the coal industry. Justin Barham
Jenna Brown Margaret Sanger believed in controlling growth population and fought for women rights of birth control. After many young women begged her to tell how to keep from having children, she decided that the knowledge of birth control should be available to all. After years of research she began to educate the public. Her teaching technique was to educate, organize and legislation. As Margaret began to teach she faced opposition. She was threatened with many charges of breaking the law. When the charges were dropped she began Planned Parenthood Federation. Margaret stuck to what she believed in and fought till she achieved her goals and dreams of growth population.
Brutal conditions, hard work, and insane ages. A man named Lewis Hine an American sociologist who took up photography. In 1905 he used his photography skills to show the working class conditions of the poor immigrants from Europe. The photos showed how difficult the life style was for the immigrants. Also the photos showed the different jobs they were forced to work. However most of the workers were young children. All but the smallest babies worked! They worked ridiculous hours, for example 3:30am to 5:00pm. On top of all that the jobs were dangerous. Lots of accidents happened. One for example was the coal mine accident, two 15 years old boys got badly injured from falling into the chutes. One boy was smothered to death, the other got both of his legs burned off. Overall what all the workers went through was very ridiculous and was never worth the low wedges.
On March 27 in 1911, many women died in the Triangle Factory fire. The factory went up in flames. No one really knew the reason as to why the fire started, but one could guess it was because of the poor work conditions and safety of the factory. The women working at the factory had previously protested against their horrendous working conditions. They warned people that it was not a good working environment and that something must be done before something happens, but their voices were not heard. No one did anything to try to help fix the factory's conditions. When the fire hit, some of the women working there, jumped off the building to meet their death at the ground while others were being burned to death in the building. Whether jumping was to have a better death or to prove a point, is not known. However, if the factories working conditions could have changed when the ladies protested, the tragic fire may have been prevented.
randy c. the main idea about joe hill was that he was an imagrant a hobo a rebel and a songwriter that was fighting for workers writes and trying to get other workers to join the union. he joined the union in 1910 when the five year old organization had begun using music to get attention of workers at street corner meetings. the wobblies and joe hill wanted a different society with a better life for the nations workers and joe wrote a stream of wobbly hit songs expressing that hope. but in january 1914 joe was arrested in salt lake city utah and was blamed for a murder of a police officer.alot of people thought joe was being framed to stop his efforts.joe keep on writing songs in prison but was eventually executed they still remeber him today for his act on workers.
Joe Hill was made famous for his song and poem compositions as an advocate for the Workers Union. He originally was an immigrate to the U.S. from Sweden. He joined the union in 1910. Joe Hill believed that songs and tunes were a more influential form of protest and persuasion. He believed "A pamphlet, no matter how good, is never read more than once, but a song is learned by heart and repeated over and over". In January 1914, Joe was arrested for the supposed murder of John Morrison and his son. Many Union members felt that Joe was being framed for his protests against the major mining companies of Utah. Because of the threat Joe Hill presented to the major industrialists and companies of Utah, he was sent to federal prison for the death penalty, without a fair trial. In his hours in prison, Joe Hill composed his will as a piece of poetry for the American Labor Movement. He is remembered today for his compositions and activism for the Worker's Union
Tragedy strikes as the Triangle Factory catches flame. Billows of smoke consume the sky as citizens and reporters crowd around. Women wishing to avoid the fiery inferno are seen jumping from 80 foot high windows, just to free fall to a different death. Overwhelmed firemen scramble around in hopes of raising ladders to the distressed civilians. Only a year prior to the incident, the women that worked there had gone on strike. They had plead for more sanitary conditions and a safer environment. Due to the factory owner's inability to comply to their wishes, over 65 lives were lost, and now we are left with this heavy memory.
Bad working conditions lead to horrible events including death. In 1913, Coal miners in Ludlow, CO got paid $1.68 a day and Colorado had the highest coal mining death rate in the world. Plus the mine owners also owned the houses they lived in. When some miners were protesting about the bad working conditions they got kicked out of their homes with their families and lived in tent towns. There were some attempts to kill them but they built fox holes were the women and children would hide during shootings. One night it was Greek Easter and the mine owners hired the Baldwin Felts Detective Agency and they light the tents on fire with kerosene and then shot into the tents many died.
During the Progressive Era, which happened between the 1880's and the 1920's, labor and work conditions in the United States were very difficult. Based on photographs, taken by Lewis Hine, it is evident that people were suffering from poverty and work. Working conditions were so bad and workers were only paid a minimal amount. Due to the economical situation of the people, children had to work as hard as the adults. Besides all these negative effects, both children and adults faced danger during their job. During this difficult era, a coal mine accident took place, which injured workers and nearly claimed the life of a man. Not only that, but people were exposed to harsh labor. Obviously, the progressive era was a harsh time for immigrants and the American citizens.
Lindsay H. The harsh working conditions and low wages lead many people to severe sickness and death during the Progressive Era. Photographer Lewis Hine documented the hardship that people endured. The photos represented the suffering of which people were faced with. In hope for living a better life they were instead left with constant pain and agony. Hines pictures showed the world that life for the workers was brutal and unfair. Many accidents were caused by the horrific places where adults and young children were forced to worked. For instance at the George S. Lee Coal Company, teenager Dennis Mckee was smothered to death, and 15 year old Arthur Allbecker was seriously burned. Children of such a young age should not be exposed to conditions such as these, and for such long periods of time. Along with being paid such incredibly low wages. The life of which these pour people lived was truly sad and appalling.
Dawson Q. During th 1900's, miners and their families had one of the hardest lives possible. They had to deal with bad working conditions ans low pay. Some miners got paid as low as a 1.68 a day. That averages to be about ten dollars in today's society. Since these conditions were so bad, many went on strike, and refused to work. One of the most famous strikes in history was the tragic event at Ludlow. The company's became angry with the miners that were on stirke, so the decided to take action. When the miners heard of what the company's were planning on doing. They all dug fox holes in every ten in the villiage. In case they decided to attack. One day the company's came to the tent town and started to shoot up all the tents. After shooting at all the tents, they decided to light the hole villiage on fire. Killing over forty people both in and out of the fox holes. This event shows that during the 1900's, life for the miners was very rough and unfair.

ReplyDeleteMargaret Sanger was a social activist who believed in controlling human population. she was a nurse and watched many poor families grow and grow from having to many children. after watching one patient die while in labor she sent facts on birth control threw the mail. She then received nine counts of federal charges and fled the country, to later come back when the charges where dropped and continue the legalization of birth control.

ReplyDeleteThere were three specific events that led to the Everett Massacre. This event happened in
Washington in a shingle mill factory.

ReplyDeleteLudlow, Colorado was one of the biggest mining facilities, but was also known for having the number one coal mine fatality rate.

ReplyDeleteMargaret Sanger was a women that made birth control available to American women.

ReplyDeleteIn the early 1900's there was a sociologist by the name Lewis Hine. Child Labor
Laws were enforced soon after.

ReplyDeleteJoe Hill, poet/song writer, joined the Five Year Old organization to grab the attention of workers with the sound of music.

ReplyDeleteIn march 27, 1911 there was a factory called the shirt waste, witch at one point caught on fire.

ReplyDeleteThe Ludlow massacre was the killing of union minors and their families.

ReplyDeleteIn 1880 kids were forced into laboring, and every one but the smallest children had to work.Kids from the ages five to nine had to pick cotton.

ReplyDeleteThe photographs that were in my packet clearly showed the harshness of child labor.

ReplyDeleteThe Coal Miners in Ludlow, Colorado, were fed up with the low pay and work conditions they had to live through on a daily basis.

ReplyDeleteIn the reading Everett Massacre there was the largest troubles with strikes in the Pacific North West.

ReplyDeleteIn the Article,"Joe Hill, Wobbly Poet and Song Writer" a man named Joe hill helped start a revolution involved with the Union. In 1914 Hill was arrested with a charge of murder of a grocery store owner. After Hill was shot in the chest he claimed innocent but refused to explain how he got wounded, except to say it was a fight over a woman. Joe Hill was framed! The thought of children as young as 2+ working nonstop in dangerous places is unbelievable.

ReplyDeleteThroughout the early 1900s birth control was illegal, but a woman named Margaret Sanger knew that birth control was crucial because many women were dying due to pregnancy.

Then the charges dropped in the united states. So she started a project called Planned parenthood federation of America and also opened a birth control clinic. And when she died in 1943, she almost single-handedly brought about the legalization of birth control in the US.

ReplyDeleteMargaret Sanger believed in controlling growth population and fought for women rights of birth control.

ReplyDeleteBrutal conditions, hard work, and insane ages.

ReplyDeleteOn March 27 in 1911, many women died in the Triangle Factory fire.

ReplyDeleteJoe Hill was made famous for his song and poem compositions as an advocate for the Workers Union.

ReplyDeleteTragedy strikes as the Triangle Factory catches flame.

ReplyDeleteBad working conditions lead to horrible events including death.

ReplyDeleteDuring the Progressive Era, which happened between the 1880's and the 1920's, labor and work conditions in the United States were very difficult.

ReplyDeleteThe harsh working conditions and low wages lead many people to severe sickness and death during the Progressive Era.

ReplyDeleteDuring th 1900's, miners and their families had one of the hardest lives possible.
