As the world's population continues to increase and many areas of the world are facing sustained droughts, the world is facing an unprecedented water crisis. Explore these National Geographic websites and leave a response on the blog to each page:
1. The Signs and Solutions page has an interactive map. Read the description of the U.S.' water issues and compare the issues faced in the U.S. to the issues faced by another country. Also generalize what is happening to water resources over time by clicking on the different years (1960, 2006, 2050).
2. The Freshwater page features several videos on water issues around the world. Watch at least two of the videos and comment on anything that may have surprised you in the videos.
AlexJ: wow i think it is sad how much work it is for people to get some warm dirty water. for us, we have to turn on a sink to get fresh cold water, and some people wont even drink that. it really opens my eyes as to how different out lifestyles are through out the world.
ReplyDeletethat sucks that the US only contains 5% fresh water having the rest be underground, what will we do when the top water runs out???? I think India and Bangledash should just stop being dumb and share their water.
ReplyDeletethe water supply is diminishing in the majority of the countries around the world. both the US and Mexico are experience water problems. the US cant replace as much water as we use and Mexico has a failing water system in their cities causing some places to only get trickles of water
ReplyDelete-kellin c
Hunter is the one who said India and Bangledash are being dumb
ReplyDeleteaccording to this post or research it looks like most or a higher % of the countries are scares of water & there are a very few countries which have ample water resource.....
ReplyDelete- RISHUTA KARTHIKEYA
It is extremely surprising how rapidly the ice caps are melting. For many this is their only source of fresh water. Because of this global climate change, less fresh water will be available. If the ice caps continue to melt at their current rate, all the water will just disappear, leaving thousands of people who rely on it for drinking water and electricity without a source of either. The scarcity of water in poorer countries is sad, and I hope we can put a stop to global climate change so that we can still provide these people with clean water.
ReplyDeletethe water supply is decreasing in the majority of the countries all over the world. Both the US and Mexico are experiencing water problems.

Jessica- What i found to be surprising was that people go far places to get water and it takes a long time to fill a jug.
ReplyDeleteit is sad that in some countries people have to line up to fill buckets full of water...sometimes the water they get is not even clean healthy water.
ReplyDelete-kellin c
the U.S. has problems with fresh water, we are using more water that we are getting but still not running out. As for Brazil they have places were there is absolutely no water and other parts they have lots.
ReplyDeleteEric
The water supply around the world is shockingly high..especially in countries such as India and Mexico. They're bigger countries i would expect to have lots of clean water to share. I watched a video about India, i've become facinated with the country..in India, they have plenty of water whereas the U.S. only has 5%. Our water isn't very clean.
ReplyDelete-Eden Y. =]
it was suprising to me that all over the world countries are experincing water issues.
ReplyDelete-moises B
I was very interested by the Nation Geographic photographer that was taking photos of obscure and rare animals that lived in and around fresh water streams. As a photographer myself, I enjoyed how he was able to make these animals, that people will most likely never see in their lifetime, into works of art to show people that they are really out there in the world and are in trouble.

Out of all of the resources on the planet, I never would've guessed that the water sources were in danger of depleting. Caught me by surprise there. The U.S. seems to not be in that much danger, but most southern Asia countries and Africa suffer the damage to a large extent. For great justice we must not use up over nine thousand gallons of water a week.
ReplyDelete~Kasuga, Ayumu. (desu)
Karina- Its nice that our water source doesnt get affected throughout the years and other people in the world like kenya have to get dirty water from the ground; mainly women get the water
ReplyDeleteyo all that water in the California canal looks really gross and none of it looked like fresh water at all, we look pretty screwed
ReplyDelete-Hunter
The u.s. has a lot of water and has not run empty yet but in places like Brazil there is very limited water and in some parts no water at all. So we are way better than other countries around the world
ReplyDeleteRafael
I just can said that its hard to see many people walk many miles just to get water and in others countries had a lot of water and they don't saved but other saved
ReplyDeletePeople from other countries have to work really hard to get one fresh glass of water and all we have to do is open the foset.
ReplyDeleteeric
The USA is depleting it's own resources which are very much available whereas Brazil has plenty of water but can't use it because of lack of distribution as well as pollution. So really we have opposite problems.
ReplyDelete- Dara
The map shows that we are basically running out of water, or at least usable water.
ReplyDelete- Dara
comparing the United States water to China's water, there were many differences. Most of the US water is underground and aquifers are provided to filter the water in order for it to be drinkable. China's water supply is provided from the south and the amount of purified water is limited.
ReplyDeleteCody D.
The problem with our water seems to be that we don't have enough to support our huge population, so we keep running out in multiple parts of the country. There is a whole different issue in India. There, the people of India are having difficulties in claiming the water from Bangledesh, and because of this confusion, India is getting shorted on their water and don't have enough. Christian l.
ReplyDeleteIt's crazy how it's so easy for us to get fresh water, where as other places have to go through so much just get water that we wouldn't even think about touching. All we have to do is turn a faucet or push a button, and we have all the fresh, cold water we want. Crazy stuff man.
ReplyDelete-Hayley M.
I found it shocking that in 2050 china will have the same amount of water as Africa had in 1960 and by that time the northern half of Africa will have virtually no water at all- Analeise B.
ReplyDeleteMexico and the U.S.A both have shorter water supplies. But while Mexico suffers from droughts and has too many people in one area to give them all water, the U.S. has less than 5% fresh water and has to go to extremes to get what we need.
ReplyDeleteVictoria R
Rey- Its surprising how all of the united states surface water only represents 5 percent of the country's fresh water, and that the rest is underground. and Most of the farms, cities, towns have to rely on aquifers even this things are better then the problems of fresh water of Mexico. Mexico is suffering from regional water shortage seasonal droughts and pollution in many of its surface waters, and pipelines waste millions of gallons of water every year hurting Mexico's economy.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was interesting how much people use water in Spiritual rituals. Also, I like the smiling turtle and thought it was surprising that minnows are in danger.
ReplyDelete- Dara
i found it interesting that in 2050 indonesia will have 100 millio out f 232 million people who dont have clean water due to polution. also i find it shocking that africa will have virtually no water by that time
ReplyDeletelogan b.
Surface water in the United States represents about 5 percent of the country's freshwater reserves and the rest is underground while Mexico suffers from regional water shortages, seasonal drought, and pollution in many of its surface water sources.
ReplyDeleteErnesto F.
The United States is running low on its usable water supply, where in Brazil the water is abundant. But that water is in regions that is not populated or the water is too polluted to use.
ReplyDeleteAs for the video, I watch the one about water in Kenya. I found it surprising that it took them six hours to get to water and then the water wasn't even clean.
~Michelle T.
It suprises me that the U.S. has such a limited availability of water and yet we use it so frivolously. People in Indonesia have to wait in line for a jug of water and all we have to do is take some out of the faucet.-Analeise B.
ReplyDeletethe video conserving water was very helpful. The part with putting the milk jug with rocks in it in the toilet and the waterless car wash were surprising to me.
ReplyDeleteLucy O.
In the freshwater videos, the thing that surprised me the most was that alot of the freshwater fish are becoming extinct and also, there are ways to wash your car without water! That is something that really surprised me.
ReplyDeleteCody D.
Mexico and U.S.A suffer for clean water and while mexico suffers hunger parts of the U.S.A do as well. i hope in the nearer future Mexico and U.S.A have more clean water. Lindsey D
ReplyDeleteThe supply of US water is underground and we don't fall so short of fresh water compared to mexico city. Mexico city is one of the worlds largest city's therefore millions of gallons of water are put to waist everyday. We need to find a way to stabilize the situation because our water resources are diminishing. - Karla S.
ReplyDeleteThe map show how we're running out of useful water. Rey
ReplyDeleteWater Map
ReplyDeleteIts crazy how much available water is decreasing over time, and that there is a large percentage of countries that have scarce water recourses. A change needs to be made or eventually we are going to run out of fresh water to keep us alive and healthy.
Sadey S.
It looks like Mexico and the US have only 5% of water and other rest of the country's have a little more of water and it shows that where losing water to.I think that we need to start to save the useful water that we still have and make a change.

SIGNS & SOLUTIONS
ReplyDeleteEven though most of the freshwater in the U.S. is underground. Everyone in the United States has access to the freshwater that we do have. Compared to China, where most of the water is held in the south. While agricultural and population are in the north. And an overwhelming 300 million people in China do not have access to clean drinking water.
FRESHWATER!
I was surprised at how women in Africa who walk 5 miles, more or less, to get water. Say it's their life, that this is just what they do. It's their life to do whatever they can for water that isn't even clean.
My name is Marithe
The US uses a lot of freshwater available and still not running out although there are places like Brazil that are water rich in some areas yet also have none in some regions. Its not fair that people are forced to drink unhealthy and unclean water.

ReplyDeleteamerica has the best water and some countries don't have the best water because they are poor and the united states have to give the poor countries water so they can live and be healthy.
I think it well sucks that the african women devote their lives to finding and carrying water. Its not fair that we get water so easily and they do not.
ReplyDeleteKielee
In the US there are some large aquifers that provide a lot of our water. Some of these aquifers are getting used up. Similar to Austriala there are some water problems. People in the US are having to look farther and farther away for water. This is similar to Austriala because some times the Ausie's have plenty of water but at other times it is very dry because it is one of the driest continents.
ReplyDeleteKevin
HBROWNIE- The US uses lots of water and it is depleting really quickly. And the compared around the world, they are not wasting water but drinking unclean, hazardous water. Fresh water supply is an issue around the world, and steps need to be taken to preserve it and make it healthier. Holly Brown
ReplyDeleteThe US's fresh water is held mostly underground, and all of us have access to clean water. In china, the fresh water is not as available. Their fresh water comes from the south, while most of their farms are in the north. Due to that and many other reasons, 300 million people in China do not have access to freshwater. I think we need to be more conscience of other countries without water, so in any ways possible we can help them out.
ReplyDeleteConnorA
In the US we have depleted the aquifers much faster than was thought would happen. In Australia they have not managed there water very well. They either have plenty or very little at all.
ReplyDeletePeople in Kenya have a much harder way to get to there water than just turning on there faucet. They have to walk miles to get water that is not clean.
TGTurbo (travis)
The USA has a whole lot of drinkable water underground, but we waste a lot of it. Brazil has a lot of fresh ground water available, but they still have trouble getting drinking water to everybody. Even though we have fresh water, which most of the world does not have, we still do not use it wisely.
ReplyDeletejohn c
Both America and brazil have alot of water. In America most of all the water is underground. In brazil most of the water is not safe to drink. So in both countries they are limited of safe drinking water.
ReplyDelete-Bear
so the US has 5 percent of country's freshwater reserves.
ReplyDeleteMexico has a lot of pollution in there water and that is very bad for them.

I did not think that India had such a problem with agreeing about water. I thought that America would have the bigger problem.
ReplyDeleteErick P
in the u.s. we have lots more water than mexico we have water through out our whole country and mexico has trickles of water that goes to towns. Dan M
ReplyDeleteThere is a big problameo in the Everglades. They are in a serious drought that is effecting both their water sources and the wildlife that inhabites the area. The people of theEverglades are in the process of setting up a conservation plan. Holly Brown round 2
ReplyDeleteAmerica compared to other countries like Mexico, is very fortunate. We have a large supply of fresh water, but do not truly understand or appriciate it's importance. We can do a lot to save the water that we have my making smart choices we can make the water last for a long time for everyone.
ReplyDeleteSummer T.
I didn't know that 5 centuries ago mexico had alot water that was abaneded and now it new mexico with a population of 2o million people
ReplyDeleteSteph
I the video about the problem of thirst in Africa, I felt really guilty because I take advantage of my water availability to the point that sometimes I take half hour showers. I wish there was a way I could share the water that's here, with all the people dying of dehydration. In fact, I think I government should spend some time to take a closer look at how we could do that, because I think it's a really big issue. The video changed the way I am going to view the water coming out of my faucet tonight.
ReplyDeleteI think that we are very lucky that we have good clean water available to us very easily, though it's sad to think think about how much other countries have to go to to get a drink of sometimes not even fresh water

It's crazy that India has such a problem with their water resources. You would think a country like them wouldn't struggle with such a thing.
ReplyDeleteKerry
The U.S has a small amount of water only 5% so we should take care of it. In the other side India has significant amount of water but they have conflicts.
ReplyDeleteYesenia
In the US most of the water sources come from deep underground aquifers, so we have fresh drinking water but it's just a matter of finding it and being able to get far enough underground to get it. When compared to Mexico it is quite a far cry from the fresh drinking water in the US. Mexico has issues with pollution, water shortages and droughts, the huge problem though is the water pipes breaking in Mexico City. These old rustic pipes burst and spew out millions of gallons of water a day. If we don't control our population outbreak, then billions of people will be left without water, we also need to concentrate on the water we have and conserve it and stop these bursting pipes in Mexico and fix problems such as these.
ReplyDeleteZach N.
Wow. The United States must resort to underground aquifers, Indonesia and Mexico's water supplies are tainted by pollution, India has water but is warring over it with Bangladesh, and 85% of China's water sources are south while main agriculture and population hubs are north! With increase in the world's population, how are we ever going to have enough water to go around? Also, Owen's lake in the California video was just plain saddening.
ReplyDelete~Chandler M.
The world is running out of fresh water extremely fast. I found it very interesting at how much worse it is getting over the years. I also learned that we use underground aquifers to get our water in the US as an interesting fact. I watched the movie on conserving water; and learned just how many ways you can save water. Did you know you can wash your car without water? I found that shocking.
ReplyDelete-Amy E.
I thought that it was very interesting that the largest mountains in the world supply water to the majority of Asian rivers. Water was a very important part of life in this area.
ReplyDeleteKevin H.
In water solutions U.S. is gradually losing water, while places like Afica and China lose alot of water over time. In the videos I was supprised that people in Kenya walk forever just to get some dirty water to drink, while Americans waste water all the time. I think we need to try to conserve more water, becasue we only have 5% of surface water to use and are going through the auqafires faster than they can replenish. -Skylor K
ReplyDeleteit is sad how we some time use water as much as we want. others can even have a drip of water to drink or take a shower. people in Mexico have experience this problems. also i found interesting how the world is running out of fresh water. also over the years instead of progressing we are going down. i think we should all do something to stop this, and we can safe water for more generations
ReplyDeleteMelissa B.
Kylar:
ReplyDeleteI think that the lack of freshwater around the world is shocking and scary. It makes me sad to see how scarce water is around the world especially in Africa. Over time it shows that the U.S. figures out how to get water (because of money and equipment etc.) but countries like India, China, African countries and countries in that region are facing a very scary thing. Someday we will run out of freshwater. As soon as possible we need to find a less expensive way to get the salt out of the ocean.
